| The Value of Integrated Backup and Restore
Most dietitians (as well as personal users) will tell you that they could be more productive if they were able to load their nutrition software onto more than one machine. If they could have a copy on their desktop at work, and a copy on their home PC or perhaps on a notebook PC, they could be far more flexible as to where and when they did their work. But most End User License Agreements won’t let you install the software on more than one machine unless you are willing to pay for multiple copies of the software. Let's say you've installed your nutrition software on two or more PC's. You still have a big problem... you have no way to move your information from machine to machine. This is a problem unless you don’t mind having your client data, recipes, meals, and meal plans scattered across your various computers with different data on each machine. With most nutrition software, there is no way to move the data from one computer to another without manually copying files from certain folders and copying them into the proper folders on other machines. This is where the value of integrated Backup and Restore becomes clear, and here's how this feature works: EXAMPLE At the end of the day, you insert a floppy (or CD-R, CD-RW, or Zip Disk or any other removable media) and click the Backup Icon. All your client information, your recipes, your intakes, meals, meal plans - everything - is copied to a highly compressed file on your diskette. The file name is the date that the file is saved. If you prefer, you can simply check a box that offers to email your backup anywhere you wish... in this case, you'd email it to your home PC. Click the button and you're done. If you chose to transport your data on removable media, just take it home and start your diet software on your notebook PC. Insert the diskette or other removable media and click the Restore Icon. In a few seconds, the version of the diet software that was on your work PC is now sitting on your notebook PC. Take the notebook PC home with you. Work all night long and enter more clients, recipes, meals, meal plans, etc. When you are finished, click the Backup Icon to back it up to your diskette. At work, insert the diskette and click the Restore Icon. That's all there is to synchronizing your computers. Of course, you have the option to simply email the backup back to work. Note: This description is a feature that is available in at least one nutrition and fitness software product. In some cases, this feature may be available in a variety of nutrition software products. When this feature is available, it will be implemented in different ways by different products. The description provided here is an accurate description of how this feature works in at least one of these products. |
